We’ve received reports of a phishing scam where a SMS message impersonating Heritage Bank is being sent to individuals.

This message tells the recipient their account has been suspended and provides a link to click to restore access. This link is not a Heritage link and could be used by scammers to gather sensitive personal and banking information.

Here is an example of what one of these SMS messages could look like:

What is 'phishing'?

Phishing is a way cyber criminals trick you into giving them personal information. They send you fraudulent emails or SMS messages often pretending to be from large organisations you know or trust. They may try to steal your online banking logins, credit card details or passwords. Phishing can result in the loss of information, money or identity theft.  Spear-phishing is when these emails and SMS messages are highly targeted to the recipient.
